The Rhino and Eland house at Woburn Safari Park represented a unique challenge for Barretts of Aspley (BoA). BoA were required to work closely with the animal keepers to ensure all elements of the build would suit the daily requirements and welfare of both the animals and keepers. BoA was responsible for all aspects of the build, including groundworks, steel framework, utilities and sourcing suitable providers for the provision of bespoke elements.
Initially key calculations were required to finalise the specifications, such as calculating the impact load of a charging rhino, weighing over 1 tonne. Having finalised architects drawings BoA produced all required sections in suitable sequence to facilitate the installation programme.
Additionally BoA were required to source suitable suppliers for the airlock doors, rubber matting, electrics and plumbing. All of which required exacting specifications and thorough testing before the enclosure could be used.
With groundworks complete, installation of the work was carefully timed with the safari park, to provide a safe working environment, ensuring animals were safely retained whilst trades were on site.
The new Rhino and Eland house has proved a great success and is helping to facilitate improved levels of working practices and animal care.
