Omega Riverside

The Challenge

Omega Riverside is a new build apartment block located on the banks of the River Ouse near the town centre of Bedford. BMH Construction approached Barretts of Aspley (BoA) to provide the steel superstructure - from initial design and engineering to manufacture and installation.

In addition to the structural steelwork, Holorib decking and proprietary brickwork supports were specified. The build programme dictated a 12 week installation period which was to be further complicated by the restricted access due to the proximity of the local railway line and river.

The Solution

After client discussion and initial planning meetings, BoA partnered with The Clark Smith Partnership, to provide load bearing calculations and nominate the section sizes required for the build. This stage of the process was clearly critical to the build and various challenges were solved to realise the Architects drawings.

With the initial design stages completed BoA used Tekla Structures to create a 3D model of the entire superstructure. Approximately 500 tonnes of structural steel and 10,500(2) of Holorib decking were required to complete the 8 storey structure which stands over 24m in height.

Proprietary brickwork supports were installed around the perimeter of every second level to secure the accuracy and stability of the cavity walls. These supports were required to be extremely accurate to ensure co-ordination between the internal Metsec walling system and the external brickwork.

Throughout the build programme all deadlines were met and BoA took a leading role in all stages of the design, engineering and installation processes.

The quality of the planning and execution of the superstructure at Omega Riverside ensured that the build could be completed without complication, on time and on budget.
